Damascus Station by David McCloskey is a taut modern espionage thriller that drops readers into the shadow war between the CIA and Bashar al-Assad’s regime. CIA case officer Sam Joseph is sent to Paris to recruit Mariam Haddad, a Syrian Palace official, and the forbidden bond that forms between them turns an already perilous operation into something far more dangerous once they slip into a Damascus seething with fear and rebellion. As the pair hunt the man behind an American spy’s disappearance, the trail winds through high-level assassinations toward a dark secret at the heart of the regime and into the sights of Assad’s ruthless spy catcher. Published by W. W. Norton & Company and running 428 pages, McCloskey’s debut was a finalist for the 2022 ITW Thriller Award for Best First Novel.

Why We Think It Should Be Your Next Book

If you want espionage that feels lived-in rather than invented, Damascus Station is that rare thriller written by someone who actually did the work. McCloskey’s insider eye for tradecraft gives every dead drop, recruitment, and surveillance-detection route the weight of authenticity, while the doomed romance at its center supplies a beating human heart most spy novels lack. It is tense, intelligent, and morally complicated, a debut critics have set beside John le Carre, and a book that will keep you reading long past the point you meant to stop.
