Description

The Girl in the Lake by Lauren Oliver is a supernatural mystery that opens when Kate Willis, a psychologist who evaluates children claiming to remember past lives, is sent to interview a six-year-old girl with unusually vivid recollections. The assignment draws Kate back to the Massachusetts town where, twenty-four years earlier, her childhood friend Becca vanished from a summer camp and was presumed drowned in the lake. As the little girl’s memories grow uncannily specific, they begin to match details only Becca could have known, and the long-buried truth about that summer slowly rises to the surface.

Why We Think It Should Be Your Next Book

If you like a mystery that refuses to sit still in one genre, The Girl in the Lake is a rewarding place to spend a few evenings. Lauren Oliver braids psychological suspense, a decades-old cold case, and a whisper of the supernatural into a story built around an irresistible question: what do we carry with us from the past, and do the dead ever truly leave? It is atmospheric, briskly paced, and constructed so that its final shape is genuinely hard to guess. Read it by a lake this summer and feel the chill running just beneath the water.
