Description

The Spy Coast by Tess Gerritsen is an espionage thriller that trades exotic capitals for the quiet of coastal Maine. Maggie Bird, a former CIA operative, thought she had left the trade behind when she settled on a chicken farm in the sleepy village of Purity. Then a body turns up in her driveway — an unmistakable signal that someone from her old life has found her. To learn who wants her dead and why, Maggie leans on an unlikely support network: a circle of fellow retired spies who call themselves the Martini Club and are only too glad to dust off skills they thought they had shelved for good. Their private maneuvering keeps colliding with Purity’s acting police chief, Jo Thibodeau, who cannot understand why a simple death is proving so slippery — or why Maggie’s genteel neighbors always seem a step ahead of her. As the investigation reaches back through a career that ran from Bangkok to Istanbul, London to Malta, Gerritsen braids small-town warmth with globe-spanning intrigue. Published by Thomas & Mercer in November 2023, the 341-page novel launches Gerritsen’s Martini Club series and has already been optioned by Amazon Studios for television.

Author Bio

Tess Gerritsen came to fiction by an unusual path. A graduate of Stanford University, she earned her M.D. at the University of California, San Francisco, and was working as a physician when she began writing during maternity leave; her first novel, Call After Midnight, appeared in 1987. Her 1996 medical thriller Harvest brought her onto the New York Times bestseller list, and she has since written more than thirty suspense novels translated into some forty languages, with more than forty million copies sold worldwide. Her Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles novels inspired the TNT series Rizzoli & Isles. The Spy Coast opens her Martini Club series, and Gerritsen — fittingly — lives in Maine.

Why We Think It Should Be Your Next Book

If you like your thrillers with as much heart as danger, The Spy Coast is an easy recommendation. Gerritsen takes the familiar machinery of the spy novel — dead drops, old betrayals, a body that should not be there — and hands it to a cast of retirees who are wiser, funnier, and far more lethal than anyone in Purity suspects. It is a book about the past refusing to stay buried, and about the friends who show up when it does not. Fast, warm, and hard to put down, it is the rare thriller you will want to press on a friend the moment you finish.
